We love documentation

Our spec before the editing starts...

Regular readers of this blog will know that for the last few months, we’ve been designing a new version of AnnualLeave.com for 2012. We’re really excited about it. We’re nearing the end of the design phase, and we’re almost finished the functional specification (all 690 pages of it! – It’ll hit 700 by the time we sign it off, no doubt).

As any developer will tell you, documentation is about as much fun as root canal surgery, however it’s a highly important and ultimately time-saving in the long run. A good rule of thumb is that 1 hour spent on documentation saves 10 hours of development time.

So, what’s going to be in the new version?  Well, all in good time.  We’ve got some fantastic features coming that we know you are going to love. We’re going to release details of all the new features in the coming weeks, along with screens-shots to whet your appetite.

So, even though we’re about the sign off the spec and let the development team loose to start coding, we’re still open for ideas and requests.  Drop us a line for anything you’d like to see in our employee absence planning system and we’ll do our best to incorporate it.

Having said that, with a spec that’s 690 pages, there’s a good chance it might already be in there!

How much does sickness absence cost your company?

Bupa have published a useful calculator which will calculate how much sickness absence is costing your company each year.  You can see it here: http://www.bupa.co.uk/business/all-business/workplace-health/workplace-absence-calculator

Thousands of companies use AnnualLeave.com to track and record their employee absences and we hear from customers every day who state that the simple act of recording absences has actually reduce the number of suspected fraudulent sick days.  It’s called the Hawthorne effect: Simply by monitoring something, you change it’s behaviour…

We’d love to hear your ideas…

We’ve signed up to GetSatisfaction.com the independent website where customers can raise ideas, ask questions, report problems and give praise.  We’d love to hear your feedback.  You can either click the “Feedback” link at the side of this page, or click here: http://getsatisfaction.com/annualleavecom/

We’d love to hear your general feedback and ideas, but if you require support on a specific issue, please email support@evolution.ie – please don’t post your private details on GetSatisfaction.com – after all, it is a public website! Thanks!

AnnualLeave.com removes hassle of holiday time

Thanks to TechCentral.ie – Ireland’s Software for Business Blog who gave us this write-up today:

Evolution, the NovaUCD-based human resources software company, has announced the launch of AnnualLeave.com (www.annualleave.com), an application enabling organisations to track their employees’ annual or sick leave with the minimum of time and effort. It is also the first online annual leave system to cater for part-time and shift work employees.

AnnualLeave.com enables organisations to reduce mistakes in administration of annual leave by automatically enforcing parameters set by each organisation. Its flexibility ensures that organisations have complete control over the number of departments and locations covered, and can create other leave types such as maternity leave, parental leave and jury duty. Organisations can also create their own subdomain with a customised login page including branding the system with their own corporate logos.

AnnualLeave.com is provided as a software-as-a-service and is available for free to organisations with 10 or fewer employees based in one department and one location. For organisations with more than 10 employees the cost increases on a sliding scale depending on the number of employees, departments, locations, leave types to be catered for.

Review: AnnualLeave.com is a “Killer Start-up”

We’re delighted with the good people at KillerStartups.com who wrote a review – entirely unprompted by us – of AnnualLeave.com.  Here’s what they had to say:

In a nutshell, this is a web-based tool that will enable any employer to track annual and sick leave within any specific period of time. By way of the provided dashboard, anybody can track the absences of those that work for him, and ensure that everything is going according to schedule.

The provided interface makes registering a leave very easy – it is all taken care of by dragging and dropping the relevant element into the calendar which is provided, whereas a clear advantage of the site is that both part time employees and shift workers are accounted for.

As it is only fit, reports can be produced in a very simple way – all you do is set a couple of parameters and click on a button in order to have it all displayed and ready to be printed.

You can sign up for a free subscription on the site, and give this system a good try in order to determine if it can turn out be what your company needs in order to run more smoothly or not. And since it is completely configurable and brandable you can integrate it as much as you want in case all is fine.
